For extended trips overseas, consider participating in a "house exchange" with someone from the other country.

There are many organizations that facilitate house exchanges.  Your professional association, church, rotary club or travel club might be able to help you find a suitable match.

There are also for-profit businesses that specialize in coordinating house exchanges.

In addition to exchanging homes, you might also wish to exchange vehicles during the exchange period.  Should you do so, you need to make sure that both parties have appropriate automobile insurance.
